Area ratings versus output
Makers publish a heating area for 13 of the 20 stoves listed here. Some give a range (the Drolet and Osburn stoves, for example), others only "up to" a figure, and Blaze King publishes area for just one model, quoting steady output instead. Ratings assume an open, reasonably insulated house; the CMHC wood-heating guide notes that the firebox size is a better guide to heating capacity than the stove's overall size, and that large stoves work best in open-plan houses where heat circulates. For a house in a cold state or one built before 1950, check the stove's output against the heat estimate on the floor-area page, or run your own house through the calculator.

| Drolet HT-3000 | 1,000–2,700 sq ft | 110,000 | 3.5 |
The largest area any listed maker publishes is 2,700 sq ft (Drolet HT-3000), so the largest band stops there. Bigger houses usually split the load between a stove and another heat source, or use a central wood furnace or boiler, which this site does not cover.
An oversized stove is not a safe margin: run low to avoid overheating a small space, it smoulders and builds creosote (see creosote and chimney cleaning). Browse the full stove list for specifications.
